Who Is a Good Candidate for GFC Treatment for Knee Osteoarthritis?
Understand which patients may be considered for GFC, which factors affect suitability and when another knee-pain treatment may be more appropriate.

A potential GFC candidate is usually an adult with clinically and radiographically confirmed knee osteoarthritis whose pain or stiffness continues despite a reasonable trial of exercise, physiotherapy, activity modification and suitable medicines. Published GFC studies have focused mainly on moderate, not end-stage, osteoarthritis.

Diagnosis must be confirmed
Pain around the knee can come from the hip or spine, a meniscus tear, ligament injury, tendon problem, inflammatory arthritis, gout or infection. Examination and weight-bearing X-rays help establish whether osteoarthritis is the main source and how advanced it is.
Factors that may support consideration
GFC may enter the discussion when symptoms limit walking, stairs or exercise but immediate surgery is not indicated or preferred. The patient should understand that the goal is symptom improvement, that results vary and that rehabilitation and weight management may still be needed.
When GFC may not be the right next step
Urgent treatment is needed for a hot swollen joint with fever, major trauma, a fracture or a locked knee. Severe deformity, marked instability or advanced bone-on-bone arthritis may respond less predictably to injections and may require a joint-replacement discussion. Active infection, blood disorders or certain medicines can also affect planning.
Questions to ask the orthopedic doctor
Ask what diagnosis is being treated, the arthritis grade, how GFC is prepared, how many injections are proposed, realistic benefits, known risks, total cost, alternatives and the plan if symptoms do not improve. Avoid claims that guarantee cartilage regrowth or permanent pain relief.
Local assessment near East Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad
Dr. Manu Gautam can assess whether GFC fits within an individual knee-care plan after reviewing symptoms, examination, X-rays and prior treatment. A consultation is more reliable than choosing an injection from an advertisement.
Frequently asked questions
Is GFC only for older adults?
No single age determines suitability. Diagnosis, arthritis severity, health, activity needs and prior treatment matter more than age alone.
Can GFC postpone knee replacement?
Symptom improvement may help some patients manage without surgery for a period, but GFC cannot guarantee that replacement will be avoided or delayed.
Candidacy is a clinical decision, not a package: the same injection may be reasonable for one knee and inappropriate for another.
Frequently Asked Questions
Published GFC trials have mainly studied moderate Kellgren–Lawrence grade II and III knee osteoarthritis.
