Growth Factor Concentrate (GFC) is an autologous injection prepared from a patient’s own blood and placed into the knee joint. It is used in selected patients with knee osteoarthritis to try to reduce pain and improve function. GFC is not a guaranteed cure, does not replace lost cartilage on demand and is not suitable for every cause of knee pain.

What is GFC?
Blood contains platelets that release signalling proteins involved in tissue repair and inflammation. During GFC preparation, a blood sample is processed to obtain a concentrated growth-factor preparation for injection. The exact preparation and injection schedule can vary, so patients should ask what protocol is being used.
Who may be considered?
The published GFC trials have mainly studied people with moderate knee osteoarthritis, often Kellgren–Lawrence grade II or III. An orthopedic evaluation should first confirm that arthritis is the main pain source. A locked knee, fracture, infection, major ligament injury or advanced deformity may require a different plan.
What does the evidence show?
Small randomized studies have reported improvements in pain and WOMAC function scores after serial GFC injections compared with saline or hyaluronic acid. However, the evidence base is still limited, protocols differ and larger independent trials are needed. Results cannot be promised for an individual patient.
What happens during treatment?
The clinician draws blood, processes it under sterile conditions and injects the prepared concentrate into the knee. Temporary soreness or swelling can occur. The number and spacing of injections should be determined after assessment rather than copied from a generic package.
GFC consultation in Delhi NCR
Dr. Manu Gautam evaluates knee pain and osteoarthritis at Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital in Vasundhara Enclave, East Delhi, with access for patients from Noida and Ghaziabad. The consultation should compare GFC with exercise, physiotherapy, medicines, weight management, other injections and surgery where appropriate.
Frequently asked questions
Does GFC cure knee arthritis?
No treatment can currently guarantee reversal of knee osteoarthritis. GFC is intended for symptom and function improvement in selected patients, and response varies.
Is GFC made from my own blood?
Yes, GFC is described as an autologous preparation. Sterile collection and processing are important, and patients should disclose blood disorders, infection, medicines and other health conditions.
A proper diagnosis comes before an injection: not every painful knee is osteoarthritis, and not every arthritic knee needs GFC.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. GFC may improve pain and function in selected patients, but it cannot guarantee reversal of arthritis or permanent cartilage regrowth.
